This website is funded and maintained by the Chestnutwold Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) for use by the families of children who are currently attending Chestnutwold Elementary. The mission of the PTO, as stated in its Bylaws, is as follows:

"The PTO shall help promote the academic and physical development of the children of Chestnutwold Elementary School through close cooperation and relationships between parents and guardians in the home and teachers and staff at school.The PTO shall act as liaison among Chestnutwold parents; the School District of Haverford Township, its administration, teachers and staff; and the Intra-District Council of Parent-Teacher Organizations.The PTO shall foster understanding among children, parents or guardians and teachers and staff using the growth, development, and welfare of our children as the focal point of this understanding."

S.A.F.E.

We are still in need of volunteers for the S.A.F.E program. Anyone that can give 30 minutes in the morning (after 9:30am) ONE DAY A MONTH, please contact Megan Monek at megan.monek@verizon.net as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and the children thank you for making sure they get to school S.A.F.E-ly every day!!!

Race Day Registration Cost:

The first 100 registrants will receive t-shirts
Awards will be given to top finishers
Chances for runners to win raffles 
Registration also includes a pancake breakfast

Be A Champion of the Book!

"Faster, Higher, Stronger" are words meant to inspire Olympic athletes. They are also the motivational words for the Chestnutwold 2012 Reading Incentive.

We want to challenge each student to read more and to try new types of reading material. From our Opening Ceremony on April 19 to our Closing Ceremony on June 7, we want each student to read 5 books, each from a different genre. Parents of K – 1 students may read aloud, as necessary. For students in grades 3, 4 and 5, who read longer books, three books may be included that were read earlier this school year (since September, 2011.)

Each time a book is completed, your student may complete an Olympic ring in this booklet and return it to their teacher to register a genre completed.
For each genre read, your student will earn an Olympic ring, red, blue, green, yellow, or white, on their own Olympic logo.
A child who presents evidence of five genres read will earn a full logo to display at school.
Additionally, he or she will receive a gold ribbon to commemorate the event.

Information about Genres

Fiction uses characters, setting and plot to tell believable stories that are not real.

Realistic fiction is a story that can actually happen and is true to life.
Historical fiction takes place in the past with some fictional and some true characters/events .
Science fiction deals with science or technology.
Mystery includes secrets, or crimes, to solve.
Fantasy is highly imaginative and uses strange or unusual characters, setting and plot.
Humorous is full of fun and meant to entertain .

Folktales are traditional literature, originally shared by word of mouth.

Fairy Tales have magical elements.
Myths are considered sacred and explain how things came to be.
Fables teach a moral or lesson and often include animals as characters.
Legends are based on a real person or event.
Tall Tales usually contain humorous and exaggerated events that are assumed to be untrue.

Poetry is verse that uses sounds, rhythm and words to convey meaning. (book of poetry)

Nonfiction is informational and uses real people, setting, and plot to tell actual events or about a topic.

Biography is informational writing about a real person’ s life.

Autobiography is written about a real person's life by the person it is about.
